Our Experience & Expertise


Carmen Renee Berry, MSW, has over thirty-five years of experience in the publishing industry. She has authored and/or ghostwritten forty-plus books, selling over a million and a half copies worldwide. Since signing her first publishing contract in 1985, she has published with HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Thomas Nelson and other independent publishers. Her books have been translated into nine languages. 

Carmen has been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, People Magazine, and hundreds of newspaper and online news outlets. She has appeared on national media programs such as Oprah, Gayle King, Sally Jessy Raphael, Montel as well as other national and local shows on CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS and cable networks.

She holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California and a Master of Social Sciences from Northern Arizona University. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Point Loma Nazarene University.


Abigail Dengler has helped hundreds of writers and businesses reach their writing goals. She began helping people discover and hone their voices as a writing coach at Azusa Pacific University. Since then, her work has expanded to coaching many others with multiple types of writing, marketing, and editorial work. She has collaborated with rising, women-owned businesses such as Big Star Production Group and Girasol Consulting, supporting their widespread writing ventures and campaigns. Now, she thrives as a ghostwriter and developmental editor at Berry Powell Press, allying with aspiring authors to refine their manuscripts and accomplish their writing goals.

Abigail graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Sociology and Humanities from Azusa Pacific University, and she has furthered her education through courses at the Editorial Freelancers Association.


Marianne Croonquist, MS, MFT is a listener and storyteller by nature. She has assisted Carmen in her writing for the past twenty-five years, and has contributed to the success of books including Girlfriends, Bountiful Women, Coming Home to Your Body, The Unauthorized Guide to Choosing a Church and Lady You Got Balls.

Her key role as special projects and ghostwriter is fueled by twenty-five years of experience as a Marriage and Family Therapist. This background allows her to quickly crystallize an author’s core vision and values. She expertly navigates between that big picture vision and the details that truly make a work flourish. Her empathetic gift allows authors to feel fully supported through every step of the writing journey. She works well with a variety of authors and genres by skillfully weaving together ghostwriting, copyediting, research, and project management.

Marianne is a former adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University. She holds a BS in Sociology from Whitman College and an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary.


Kathleen Taylor merges a love of story with details needed in a good manuscript. She has developed her passion and skill for writing and editing throughout her life. She began her writing career with a history research assistantship that involved writing and editing book summaries. Since then, she has been the editor of a Bible Study for medical students and has worked as a marketing writer for a small business.  Not only does she herself write, but she is Certified as a Guided Autobiography Instructor, able to teach and facilitate others in their own writing ventures. As a copyeditor and proofreader for Berry Powell Press, Kathleen loves to draw out and showcase an author’s natural voice and creatively focus a storyline.

Kathleen received a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Wheaton College. She has furthered her writing education through relevant coursework and a Certification in Guided Autobiography, and she is currently a Master’s student in Professional Counseling.


Valeri Mills Barnes comes to Berry Powell Press with a distinguished career as a successful writer, columnist, newspaper chief and owner, editor, book publisher, and even an advertising and marketing executive for a variety of media and publishing companies. Beginning as a weekly columnist in a California newspaper over thirty-five years ago, Valeri quickly advanced to become the feature writer, then chief editor, publisher and ultimately owner of the paper. Additionally, Valeri has launched and grown two national trade publications, sold advertising for a variety of publishers, and spearheaded key account initiatives for magazines, newspapers, and online trade directories.

Valeri fuses her comprehensive expertise with her truest passion: editing books and coaching authors. As an editor and coach, Valeri can empathize with the author experience, attend to the details of editing, and even develop advertising strategies to maximize author reach and impact. She expertly integrates the author’s overall goals into every stage of the writing process, helping authors reach their goals in every aspect of book creation.


Carolyn Rafferty brings over thirty years experience as an award-winning documentary film maker and video editor, and the current CEO of Red Boots Media. Carolyn has traveled extensively on production crews including Egypt, Nepal, Turkey, South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania, Australia and India. She served for ten years as the Director of International Film and Video Distribution for Moody Institute or Science. She was also the Production Coordinator for The Jesus Film Project and Producer of the Story of Jesus for Children, translated into hundreds of languages and distributed worldwide. For the past ten years, Carolyn has worked with numerous authors in the recording and video editing of educational online courses and downloadable products. Carolyn has joined Berry Powell Press to assist authors communicate their message through video in the clearest, most effective way possible.


Jenee Berry, like many in her generation who grew up with technology, is adept at a variety of platforms. Her specialty is website design having taken courses in coding using HTML and CSS. With a talent for art and design, Jenee easily translates our authors’ ideas onto the website page.

With math and science as her favorite subjects, Jenee plans to become a biomedical engineer in the future. For now, she is focused on graduating from high school, enjoying her friends, and pursuing her love for learning languages.
